Kenneling Your Dog

A part of being a dog owner is having a system in place for what to do with your fur baby when you cannot be home for an extended amount of time. It takes a little planning sometimes to decide if putting your pet in a kennel at home for hours at a time or if bringing them to a kennel establishment is best for a more extended period. It all boils down to a little research and knowing your dog.

I’m sure we have all experienced the sad eyes our pups give when they know it’s time to go into the crate. Needless to say, we are tempted to give in to the “adorable spell.” Crates, however, are helpful for several reasons like house training (dogs don’t like to soil their resting area), travel, and limiting access to the home when you’re not there in case they tend to chew on things. Sometimes your dog may also need a break from the busyness of your household or just a familiar place to nap. Using a Kennel/Crate is also beneficial for older pets who may be dealing with health issues and need a comfortable place to rest frequently. While some dogs are more rambunctious and enjoy roaming around others appreciate having a space of their own to retreat to.

There are also things to be cautious of when crating your dog:

·  Never use them for punishment.

·  Leaving your dog in too long could cause them to become depressed from lack of exercise and human interaction.

·  Puppies under six months don’t have strong bladder control and should not be left in for longer than four hours max.

·  Crate your dog until they can be trusted to move around the house without causing destruction and to avoid accidents.
